Die 35. Tagung des Bayerischen Promotionskollegs für Politische Theorie findet an der Universität Innsbruck unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. Marie-Luisa Frick statt und besteht aus einem Doktorand:innen-Workshop und einem interdisziplinären Symposium. Ziel des Doktorand:innen-Workshops am 25.09.25 ist es, den Doktorand:innen des Promotionskollegs die Möglichkeit zu geben, ihre Dissertationsprojekte vorzustellen, im Plenum zu diskutieren und Feedback zu erhalten.
Das Symposium am 26.09.25 beschäftigt sich aus diversen Perspektiven mit dem Konzept der liberalen Demokratie: Liberal democracy routinely is invoked in opposition to its various “others,” yet its conceptual contours often remain unclear: What, after all, are its essential characteristics? Starting from the assumption that the concept of liberal democracy is inherently charged with tension stemming from the coupling of popular sovereignty with mistrust in popular government and with its (self-)limitation accordingly, this interdisciplinary symposium will look at the current challenges liberal democracies face both internally and externally. In addition to conceptual analysis and historical reconstruction, the following questions are of particular interest: What forms of legislative self-limitation/separation of powers are indispensable for “enlightened” democracies, and when would such constraints risk casting doubt on the promise of democratic rule (e.g., liberal democracies, fundamental rights and the role of courts)? How can liberal democracies withstand the populist challenge or even gain strength from it? By what means can liberal democracies protect themselves from internal as well as external threats without betraying their own value-based foundations (e.g, liberal dilemmas of militant democracies)? If the institutional arrangements of liberal democracies always are attempts to balance their inherent tensions, what possibilities exist for constitutional development and re-arrangements in light of present needs?
